Oats are incredible for the skin! They repair, moisturise and soothe the skin due to having high levels of antioxidants and their natural anti-inflammatory properties. They restore moisture to dry skin improving its appearance and reducing irritation as well as creating a protective barrier on the surface of the skin that guards against bad bacteria and UV rays. Oatmeal can also soak up the excess oil on your skin and help treat acne. Oats also contain compounds called saponins which are natural cleansers that remove the dirt and oil that clog your pores. This makes them a great choice to use as an exfoliant, especially if you suffer from sensitive or dry skin conditions such as eczema.
Milk is rich in Vitamins B and D, alpha hydroxy acids, calcium and other potent antioxidants. It has so many skin benefits, nourishing skin cells from deep within and keeping skin moisturised all day. It is famous for giving youthful glowing skin – boosts collagen production, slows down fine lines and wrinkles and protects skin from free radicals that cause premature aging. Milk also helps fade dark spots and marks, reduces acne and promotes skin elasticity.
Honey acts as a humectant when applied to skin, helping your skin attract and retain moisture. Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities make it a great treatment for blemishes, fighting bacteria while reducing redness and irritation as well as being an effective treatment for shallow wounds like cuts, scrapes, and skin irritation. It is rich in phenolic acids and antioxidants that can protect against damage from free radicals which contribute to aging and certain diseases. These antioxidants also help protect against heart disease, inflammatory disorders and neurological degeneration. Adding honey to your bath makes for a relaxing soak that leaves feeling soft and moisturised.
Arrowroot has many wonderful skin care benefits. It is used to treat burns and sunburn as well as drying up blemishes and rashes. Arrowroot also helps to keep the skin hydrated by absorbing moisture resulting in your skin feeling smooth, soft and silky.
Sugar is popularly used as a scrub for gently exfoliating skin without damaging. It is a source of glycolic acid which is the smallest alpha-hydroxy acid. Because of its size, these molecules can penetrate deep into the skin, loosens the bonds of skin cells and promotes new cell growth. It’s also a natural humectant so draws moisture from the environment into the skin, keeping the skin soft and hydrated. It helps to lighten the skin, tightening it and diminishing scars. Due to its antibacterial properties, sugar promotes healthy skin, preventing acne and pimples. Brown sugar is less abrasive than white so is better for those with sensitive skin.
Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) contains anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. This makes it an ideal ingredient for skin irritation, bug bites, and mild rashes. Since it is alkaline in nature, it balances the pH levels of your skin to make it glow with radiance.
Citric Acid is found naturally in citrus fruits, especially lemons and limes. It gives them their sour taste. It is commonly used as an additive in food, cleaning agents and nutritional supplements and is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) which is a common inclusion in many skincare products. We use it in our bath bombs, bath truffles and cream fizz muffins.
Citric acid gently exfoliates your skin and removes dead skin cells. It reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, evening skin tone and helping to brighten, soften and smooth the skin.
Nuts are tremendously rich in calcium and minerals, which make them extremely nourishing and they ‘feed’ the skin, smoothening and softening it without leaving a greasy residue.
As they are high in fatty acids and possess antioxidant properties, nut oils are often used in skincare. They also make an excellent exfoliator and we use them in our honey nut scrubs.
