Whether you’re implementing mindfulness into your day-to-day life, or just need more time to breathe, a daily, weekly or even monthly self-care routine is important for your physical and mental wellbeing.

Why is self-care important?

Life has always been stressful, but modern technology and a growing workforce, along with the recent pandemic, has increased the amount of stressors we face.

Self-care allows us a moment to breathe, recuperate and let go of what’s been weighing on our minds. Without this space, our mental and even physical wellbeing will take the brunt of it.

Stress not only affects our mind, but also our body. It adds stress to the heart, increases anxiety and overall exhausts us. With our energy depleted, we crave more sugary foods, which creates a rollercoaster of energy and “sugar crashes” throughout the day.

How to implement a self-care routine

This vicious cycle will continue until we inevitably crash or make a change. Change can be as simple as creating a self-care routine, even if it’s just making sure to brush your teeth before bed.

Creating a routine is daunting, but creating habits is a lot easier than breaking them. By creating or including simple changes to your day-to-day life, you can create moments of peace and quiet for yourself and your mind.

Start by doing something new for a few days – a week. Wash your face before bed, eat at the dinner table with no phones, read a chapter of a book before bed. Give yourself that time to be able to focus on you. Eventually, you may even be able to clear an entire day, or evening, dedicated solely to you.

Allowing this time will not just reduce the amount of stress, but it can also give you a clearer mind and a better ability to handle anything that comes your way.
